I'm also of the belief that the so-called "classical" stories like Greek or Indian myths have staying power precisely to the extent to which they portray or discuss real human traits or experiences. As long as we're still able to relate to them, they're not going anywhere. The interesting feature of which stories tend to survive is that they don't tend to be very "realistic" in how they depict the setting, or external mundane circumstances within which the characters operate.
